How to Release Fear | 3 Steps

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I was afraid to start this blog, so afraid it took me nearly 3 years to do it. Now as I sit here and type I think to myself…what was the worst thing that could have happened had I began my blogging journey 3 years earlier? I now realize that  my fear of blogging was completely irrational, however that feeling of dread was all too real at one point.

While publishing a blog may not be a fear for you, I’m sure there’s at least one thing you would absolutely love to accomplish but you’re just too damn scared and I get it. I’m going to give you a few tips on how I cope with and overcome fear.

What is fear?

Before we dive into how to release it, let’s define what fear is. From a techinical standpoint fear is a state of alarm or discomfort typically brought on by an immediate threat or sense of danger. Fear is what triggers our fight or flight response and in certain circumstances can save our lives.

Interestingly enough, fear is also biochemically the same as excitement, only it is manifested in a negative state. So the next time you feel afraid, try to channel that negative fearful energy into positive, exciting energy.

3 Steps to fearless!

Allowing yourself to move past fear will be something you must work on daily because there will always be new goals and challenges bigger and scarier than the last. You can and will get better at dealing with your fears. Here’s a few tips you can use to conquer and reach your goals.

Step One: Identify 

Take a moment to acknowledge what it is you are afraid of. For example when starting to blog I feared judgement, not being able to provide value, being vulnerable and having people see it and so on.

Step Two: Questions

Ask yourself what your life would look like if you allow fear to hold you back from what it is you want. Then ask yourself what your life would look like if you move beyond the fear. Is the fear worth missing out on something that could change your life, make you happy or make you proud?

Step Three: Action

At this point you may come to realize you have more to gain by overcoming fear opposed to surrendering to it. Now it is time to act. The best way to get over the fear of anything is to just do it. At the end you will most likely see it’s not so bad after all plus you will gain confidence through experience which will make you less likely to be as afraid moving forward.
